Ruthless Criminal Leaves A Violent Path |
|
| |
David James Roberts has been in trouble with the law his whole life. But Roberts is no two-bit criminal, he has been convicted of some of the most heinous crimes on the books.
Roberts had several brushes with the law before January 1974, but he joined a whole new league when he burned down the home of a Whiteland, Indiana family with three people inside. Investigators found that Bill Patrick and his wife Heidi were killed before the fire even began--and even more tragically, their one-year-old daughter died from smoke inhalation during the fire. Clues fell into place and investigators knew Roberts was their man. He was then arrested for the arson and murders.
Roberts was released from jail on bond. Most people who are facing murder charges, out on bond, keep a low profile. Not Roberts.
Several months after Roberts' release, a young woman in Indianapolis was raped in her car at gunpoint. Although this woman was being raped, her main concern was for the safety of her infant son who was also in the car. After the rape, the attacker locked his victim in the truck of her car and kept the infant with him in the front. When the rapist finally left the car, his victim was horrified when she was pried out of the trunk to find her infant nowhere in sight. A few hours later a citizen called the police to report finding the body of a baby by the side of a road. Left out alone in the frigid November morning the infant died from the elements. Putting clues together police suspected Roberts might be their man and after the victim identified him he was charged with rape and murder. Roberts was now believed to have killed two infants in less than one year. |

Convict Makes Mysterious Escape |

After being convicted for his murder, kidnapping, arson and rape Roberts was condemned to serve six life sentences in Indiana State Prison. Roberts has chronic lung problems and frequently needed visits to a hospital. On October 24, 1986 Roberts was on one his routine hospital trips to Wishard Memorial Hospital in Indianapolis, about a 3-hour trip, when it seems he decided he had had enough of prison life.
Roberts had been strip searched before the trip and shackled during the ride. Somehow he managed to get possession of a .38 caliber handgun and on the drive back to the prison pulled it on the two guards escorting him. With the gun in hand, Roberts commanded the guards to unlock his handcuffs. He then handcuffed the two guards together and took away their side arms. Roberts took control of the vehicle and drove it in the opposite direction toward Illinois. When Roberts decided to stop to make a call from a payphone the guards managed to escape. But before the guards could get a hold of authorities Roberts was gone and on the run.
On April 27, 1987 Roberts was placed on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List. |
